Selous Game Reserve is the largest wildlife game reserve in Africa. It covers approximately 45,000 sq km. Selous Game Reserve is named after the British explorer Frederick Courteney Selous who was killed in the area by an elephant during World War I. This Game Reserve is famous for its multiple activities; the northern part is set for game viewing, walking and boat safaris in the Rufiji River.

In the southern part hunting is permitted by obtaining a hunting license. Dozens of birdlife at the Rufiji delta and a great number of wildlife like elephants, buffaloes, hippos, wild dogs and crocodiles along the Rufiji River are easily viewed. With 250 km long, Rufiji River is the backbone of the water supply to the birdlife and wildlife around the year. Plenty in water, it is believed to be one of the big water-catchments in East Africa.

Rufiji River offers a boat tour during sunset after a full day exploration of wildlife. Boats can be attained in most lodges and campsites.
